How to tell a real kufiya, how to wash it, and what the patterns say.
Is it woven or printed?
Woven, on the original looms in Hebron. Turn it over — on a woven kufiya the pattern reads the same from both sides. A printed one has a faint front and a blank back.
How do I wash it?
Cold hand wash, or a gentle machine cycle inside a laundry bag. No bleach and no fabric softener. Air dry flat and never tumble dry — heat is what shortens a kufiya's life.
Will it shrink or fray?
It is 100% cotton, so expect slight shrinkage on the first wash. The fringe is hand-knotted rather than glued, so it holds; if a knot loosens you can retie it.
What do the patterns mean?
The bold mesh is the fishing net of the Mediterranean coast. The curved border lines are olive leaves — endurance and rootedness. The straight lines mark the old trade routes across historic Palestine.
